How to block gambling transactions on TSB
A UK high-street bank whose gambling block is the only one here you can switch on without a smartphone - the app, Internet Banking, the phone line and a branch counter all set the same block. This page covers TSB current account and TSB debit card.

The short answer
TSB documents an opt-in gambling block for TSB current account and TSB debit card. 48 hours, fixed. TSB: “If you then turn it off, you’ll need to wait 48 hours to make gambling payments again.” The block itself is instant; only the removal waits. TSB: “The block instantly stops TSB debit card payments to most gambling websites, casinos, and betting shops.” You need to be 18 or over and hold a TSB debit card.
How do I turn on the TSB gambling block?
- 1 Open the TSB Mobile Banking App and tap the card icon next to your account to reach Manage Cards
- 2 Select the debit card you want the block on
- 3 Tap Gambling block and move the toggle to On. TSB: “the block takes effect straight away”
- 4 No smartphone, or you would rather not do it alone? TSB: “It takes just a click or two to activate this feature in the app or Internet Banking. If you’d rather, you can also do this in branch or over the phone.”
Do it in the bank's own app — www.tsb.co.uk/help-and-support/gambling-support.html is TSB's own page on it.
How do I turn off the TSB gambling block?
- Cooling-off
- 48 hours, fixed. TSB: “If you then turn it off, you’ll need to wait 48 hours to make gambling payments again.” The block itself is instant; only the removal waits.
- You set it?
- No — the bank fixes the delay and will not change it for you.
- What it covers
- TSB: “The block instantly stops TSB debit card payments to most gambling websites, casinos, and betting shops.” You need to be 18 or over and hold a TSB debit card.
If you are here to switch it off: you can start that now, but you cannot finish it now. The block comes off at the end of the cooling-off period above and not a minute sooner, and no amount of messaging support shortens it — that is the entire reason the feature exists. Switching the block on is instant. Only switching it off is slow.
Worth saying plainly, because you already know it: the urge that sent you looking for this will be gone long before the cooldown is. What to do with the next twenty minutes is the more useful page if that is where you are.
What doesn't it cover?
- Gambling subscriptions already set up as a direct debit. TSB lists “Gambling subscriptions that are paid on direct debit” among the payments the block does not stop - cancel those separately, in the same sitting.
- Bank transfers. TSB names “Faster payments and bank transfers” explicitly. A transfer to a betting account or a crypto exchange is the obvious way round a card block.
- Offshore sites and crypto. TSB lists “Non UK Gambling sites/platform” and “Crypto currency” as outside the block - this is the gap GAMSTOP does not close either, and the reason a device blocker matters here.
- Lottery tickets, sometimes. TSB: “Lottery tickets may be blocked. This depends on how they are bought.”
- Faster Payments and standing orders sent by account number and sort code.
- Non-UK gambling sites and crypto purchases, both of which TSB names as outside the block.
- Cash withdrawn at an ATM and carried into a betting shop.
What should I do alongside the TSB block?
In this order, tonight, while the resolve is there.
- 1 Switch the block on now - it is instant, and the 48-hour delay only ever applies to switching it off.
- 2 Cancel any gambling direct debits in the same sitting. TSB says the block does not touch them, so they survive it.
- 3 Add GAMSTOP, which shuts you out of every online gambling site licensed in Great Britain at once. TSB points at it from this page: “GamStop is a simple tool that blocks you from UK gambling websites and apps.”
- 4 Layer a device blocker for the offshore sites and crypto TSB names as outside the block.
Is a bank block enough on its own?
A card control does not close a gambling account or necessarily restrict other payment methods. Consider combining it with: operator self-exclusion, app by app, GAMSTOP and the other national self-exclusion schemes, and a blocker that locks betting apps on your phone. The full method is in the guide to blocking gambling transactions at your bank. If you want the number that makes the case, work out what this is costing you a year.
